Autumn is a season where the earth prepares to rest and it is a time of harvest. We can take time to reflect and to enjoy nature’s bounty. And as nature lets go of her beauty so vividly, so are humans invited during this season of autumn to let go. As we reflect, we can let go of of beliefs or behaviors that no longer serve. We can let go of old habits. Autumn is that time.
In five elements traditional acupuncture which integrates the body, mind and spirit, autumn is associated with the element of metal. Beyond the association of metal with hardness which contributes to structure and strength (thinking of the “bones” of a building), copper is also a metal, an essential element in fiber optic and all wired communication externally and inside most of our communication and media devices.
In a coaching conversation, as we explore possibilities, I might ask my client what letting go of a belief or behavior would look like. In asking the question I am invoking the season of autumn in our coaching conversation. If we are exploring communication issues in a coaching engagement, it could be said that we are looking to strengthen the element of metal.
Enjoy autumn’s gifts.
